"We don't listen to understand...we listen to reply!"

Facebook has become quite the hot platform of airing one's opinions and concerns recently with current political and social events.  I vowed about a year ago to abstain from posting social and political posts or comments because I realized how much drama it stirred up.  Having a conversation in person is vastly different than a conversation on FB.  We get heated, angry, attack often and get defensive quickly.  Words are taken out of context and tone and other non verbal cues can't be transmitted via cyber space.  People misunderstand, we get pissed, we tend to go to the extremes (be it left or right)....all through our keyboard.  I feel like these conversations could be much different in person, but perhaps not.  We live in a world where our first reaction is to get defensive.  It's okay to disagree....I don't want to live in a world where we are all the same.  I feel like communication issues mostly stem from one thing..."The biggest communication problem is that we do not listen to understand....we listen to reply"
I would not think that my personal beliefs and values would come as any surprise.  I do not flaunt it in your face nor do I hide if asked.  While I don't agree with how others live their lives and I'm sure many don't agree with mine, I am only in charge of one person.  However, what I hope can be said about me in the end is that while "I may not have agreed with all, but I tried to show love and respect to all I came across irregardless."
